Understanding how our town works

Updated: Sep 12, 2025

After laying the groundwork, the next step in the Kununurra Reimagined project was hearing directly from you – the people who live, work and spend time in Kununurra. In June 2025, nearly 1,000 community members took part in the first survey, sharing experiences, concerns and aspirations for the Town Centre and Lake Kununurra Foreshore.

Your voices provided powerful snapshot of what matters most and what you want to see for the future.

Who We Heard From

The survey reached a range of people from across the Kununurra community including long-term residents, new arrivals, business owners, young people and Elders. The largest group of respondents were aged 25 to 44, however it's worth noting that every age group was represented. Almost 17% of participants identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, ensuring that First Nations perspectives were strongly included.

What You Told Us Makes Kununurra Special

Survey 1 asked a simple but important question: what do you love most about Kununurra?

The answers painted a clear picture:

  • The deep connection to Country and landscape, from red rocks and boabs to rivers, lakes and glowing sunsets.

  • The rhythm of the seasons, where the Wet and Dry transform the land and lifestyle.

  • A strong community spirit, where people look out for each other.

  • The outdoor lifestyle of camping, fishing, boating and adventure at your doorstep.

"The land holds a stillness and strength you can feel… there’s something sacred about it."

What Needs to Improve

When it came to the Town Centre and Foreshore, people were proud but honest:

  • Safety and inclusivity were top priorities. Many spoke of antisocial behaviour, poor lighting and the need for more welcoming spaces for families, young people and Elders.

  • Functional infrastructure like parking, walkways, toilets and signage needed attention.

  • Shade and greenery were highlighted as essentials for comfort in Kununurra’s climate.

  • Recognition of Miriwoong culture was seen as central to the town’s identity and something that should be visible in design, storytelling and spaces.

"A proper area for caravans is desperately needed."

Insights About the Foreshore

The Lake Kununurra Foreshore was seen as one of our greatest natural assets, but many felt it wasn’t being used to its full potential. People wanted:

  • Safer swimming areas and family-friendly spaces at Swim Beach.

  • Clearer walking and cycling paths to connect the Foreshore to the Town Centre.

  • Better maintenance, shade and seating.

  • Spaces for cultural storytelling and celebration.

"I’d love to see Kununurra become a truly lush and green town, full of life, nature, and vibrant spaces where locals can safely gather, connect, and build community."

Looking Ahead

Survey 1 helped us understand how our town works today and what you want to see tomorrow. The feedback showed a strong desire for a safe, green, culturally respectful Town Centre and a Lake Kununurra Foreshore that is welcoming, active and connected to the water.

These insights were crucial in shaping Chapter 2 Wishlist: Big Ideas - What Could the Future Look Like? As always, the vision for Kununurra’s future will continue to be guided by you – the community at the heart of this place.
